Price Signals

Changes in market prices that convey information about relative scarcity, demand, and alternative uses of resources.

Prices do not contain every reason behind a change, but they allow people to adjust without possessing all of the underlying local knowledge. A higher price can encourage economising, substitution, or new supply; it is a signal rather than a command.
